Cemetery Rules and Regulations

A Helpful Guide to Grave Decorations

 

In order to preserve New Salem Cemetery in an appropriate manner and provide for the safety of cemetery visitors and of those who maintain the cemetery grounds, the New Salem Cemetery Corporation has established the following rules and regulations.

 

Approved Decorations Include:

·         Fresh flowers or artificial flowers in a monument vase or secured vase next to tombstone (example: plastic vase with spike) 

·         Small flags during the holidays

·         Christmas wreaths during the Christmas season

·         Devotional lights during Christmas season

 

Unauthorized Decorations Include:

·         Fencing or any borders around the grave

·         Glass or plastic ornaments, ceramics, candles, or jars

·         Decorations with stakes stuck into the ground, including shepherd’s hook (see exception above)

·         Stuffed animals or similar commemorative items

·         Large flags or banners

·         Decorative shells, rocks, toys, or statues

·         Wind chimes, crosses, or bird feeders

·         Vigil lights, devotional lights (see exception above)

·         Windmills, balloons, pennants, ornaments, paper items

·         Any objects that may obstruct seasonal care of graves

 

These unauthorized decorations are not allowed because of a safety threat and their interference with the lawn care and maintenance procedures of the cemetery.  Please note that unauthorized decorations will be removed and discarded.  Thank you for your cooperation with these regulations.
